How to become a Dispensing Optician
The Majority of Dispensing Opticians in Ireland have studied an Ophthalmic Dispensing courses in the UK either full time or as a blended learning option. The blended learning option takes 3 years and requires block release each semester in the university or college and a portfolio of case records to be completed by the end of the 3 years, along with the completion of all practical, written and oral examinations.

Personal Qualities and Skills
You need to enjoy working with people from all backgrounds and be able to communicate sensitively with them. You also need a scientific, methodical approach to your work. You should be willing to promote sales to customers and be able to develop administrative and managerial skills.

- Dispensing opticians can enhance their qualifications by doing further training in Contact Lens Fitting or Low Vison.
- Employers throughout the country include Opticians throughout the country, hospital eye clinics, frame and lens manufacturers, ophthalmic instrument manufacturers and Contact Lens manufacturers.
